In
July 2004 four members of Qajaq-København went to Tasiilaq on
the east coast of Greenland to build traditional eastgreenlandic
kayaks. The two kayaks that were built were handed over to the local
kayak club "Tsaqit Tasiilaq" and are now used by local members.
The main reason for us to start this project was to establish closer
relations to Tasqit Tasiilaq and promote interest in traditional
eastgreenlandic kayaks.
Unlike on the west coast of Greenland recreational kayaking with
traditional skin on frame kayaks hardly exists on the east coast. Often
the traditional skin on frame kayak is substituted by kayaks made of
plastic or fibreglass. Equally when it comes to hunting (especially
Narwhale).
By the time the project began Tsaqit Tasiilaq had asked for membership
of The Greenlandic Kayak Association (Qannat Katuffiat) but was refused
entry because the number of traditional kayaks compared to modern
kayaks was to low.
